More Bratz findings [Nov. 12th, 2006|11:24 am]
[Tags|, ]

Bratz Twiins Collector Dolls - no pic, but the description says "Set of brother/sister twin Bratz dolls" (but then states "these girls are sure to be in style" so maybe they're just confused.)

Bratz "Winter Fun Pack" with Koby and Dana. Koby Lives! I was starting to worry. And... uh... Ailani? That's a little wierd.

More finds from the UK [Nov. 12th, 2006|11:45 am]

A purple Bratz Dynamite bike? It's still pretty silly-looking.

Forever Diamondz limo and tour bus. Just paint jobs, really. (Edited to add:: There's also a FD Plane.)

A Ponyz styling head! I didn't even notice the lack of body at first - I thought it was one of those odd Ponyz that's posed like a sitting dog.

I totally don't recognize the outfits depicted on these Bratz Campfire activity books.

More Bratz movie/DVD news [Nov. 12th, 2006|12:25 pm]

The Pixiez DVD got mentioned in Variety. Hopefully we'll start seeing listings for it in online stores soon - I'm curious about how they'll manage to do a fairy-themed story without either ripping off Fairytopia, rehashing the Genie Katia storyline, or - worst of all - looking too juvenile for the Bratz demographic.

I would have noticed that blurb sooner if I wasn't trying to avoid reading about the live-action Bratz movie, which just strikes me as a train wreck waiting to happen. I like my Bratz as big-headed fashion cartoons fully divorced from reality, thanks.

"Film's storyline will follow four teenage girls who come from different social and economic backgrounds." Ooo. I wonder if that means someone's going to be designated the "poor girl?" My guess is Jade, because she seems the least likely to fall afoul of some ugly ethnic poverty stereotype. Or maybe they're just going to vary from middle-class suburban to obscenely wealthy, and thus avoid the whole issue of how poverty necessarily limits one's access to funky and fabulous fashions.

J1899 [Nov. 12th, 2006|08:21 pm]

So I was out grocery shopping at Superstore and decided that, if they weren't going to have any boxes of the President's Choice praline chocolates that were passed around at my work (OMG so good!) that I would treat myself to something else. In this case, a Fashion Fever clothing set for my neglected Blythes. I picked J1899, with the burgundy satin pants and leather-and-lace bustier. I've contemplated buying the FF fashion packs for my Blythes many times, but this is the first time I've actually gone for it.

Now that I have it, I'm even more surprised that Mattel ever released it, because the only thing reining in Barbie's boobs on that bustier is a thin strip of shiny black vinyl.

Unfortunately, the outfit is WAY too large for my Blythes - too large to fudge it by playing with the velcro, anyways. I'd have to sew some tucks on the back side to make it fit, and the lace doesn't look very forgiving.

On the other hand, the shoes - which I'd barely glanced at - fit wonderfully. They're little pearl-silvery flats with a bumpy effect that I think is supposed to look like quilting, or maybe just stars. Either way, they're cute.

So, maybe not the most cost-effective purchase, but I got a pair of Blythe-compatible shoes out of it for less than the cost of a Re-ment mystery box. I know that they make FF accessory packs that are just shoes and purses, so I might buy the occasional one of those from now on.

Games 4 somebody [Nov. 12th, 2006|09:19 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Apparently there's a bit of blog controversy going around that Gamestop has a seasonal display of "Games 4 Girls" that prominently features Bratz, as well as Barbie and miscellaneous pink-hued Disney properties. The problem being that some women think the rack is insulting to female gamers.

Now, I agree that the video game industry desperately needs to buy a clue when it comes to female gamers. But the "Games for Girls" rack is for girls. Little ones, specifically. Not women that call themselves "girl gamers." If the Gamestop employees start pointing adult female gamers towards that display, then we have a problem, but that's not what's going on here as far as I know.

They're separating the rack precisely because it's so bloody hard to find the few games that are made with little girls in mind, and without a little marketing, most Christmas gift shoppers might not realize they even exist. If the selection is weak, well, it's not really Gamestop's fault. The video game industry doesn't make games for little girls unless they're cashing in on some can't-miss franchise from another medium. And tie-in games have a long history of sucking, going back to the infamous E.T. game for the Atari 2600. But a Bratz or Little Mermaid tie-in game has to be better then nothing at all, especially if the alternative is letting the boys hog the Playstation all day.

That said, (as someone pointed out over on Kotaku) the rack is sadly missing some obvious winners, like Nintendogs and Animal Crossing. Maybe they're just sold out? Or maybe they don't want to scare their core market of nervously heteronormative teenage boys away from the few crossover hits they have. I dunno. The execution may not be perfect, but at least it's something.
