Random notes on a good day [Jul. 18th, 2009|10:39 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

More for my own reference than anything:

I am totally loving the Autoshoujo Cover Contest. I have two funny ones in the works, and I've got a pretty slick fake manga cover template mocked up on my C drive, but I seem to be stalling out on doing the actual drawings.

I saw an awesome old woman rocking this t-shirt earlier today. She was stopping people dead in their tracks. Too cool.

Also, I got a major haircut today, so maybe I need to update my ancient collection of userpics. I'm still contemplating adding some fuschia pink streaks.

We made jambalaya. It was amazing.

Spotted at Walmart [Jul. 18th, 2009|10:32 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

I ran by Walmart on Friday and was surprised to see new Bratz dolls.

One was the cartoon mascot themed line (Iconz, allegedly? There was nothing to that effect on the boxes). Cute but very plasticky-looking.

There was another unnamed line, with Cloe dolled up like a Country & Western singer, Jade as an artist, and Yasmin as a purple hippie "Earth Girl." I may return for Jade. She had very striking green eyes. I think Yasmin had freckles...?

And the third was the Desert Jewelz line, with C&Y&J dressed like genies in harem pants. Cloe's pants had some ill-advised slits going way WAY up the front of the legs.

I also saw a few of the BFC Ink fashion dolls, which looked like standard Mattel-style fashion dolls, except a wee bit shorter. Fashions were decent but not exciting. They were placed with all the Mattel HSM/Hannah Montana/Barbie dolls, and unfortunately the BFC dolls' faces looked a lot less expressive. Then again, I've been wondering if Mattel has somehow improved their vinyl head production process to reduce distortion, because it seems to me that those celeb-based dolls no longer look like they've been smacked in the face with a tennis racquet.

But finally I saw some Moxie Girlz Sasha Art-titude dolls. Couldn't get a price, and I couldn't buy one right then for logistical reasons, but I do like the outfit. Especially the grafitti print on the leggings. I wasn't very impressed with the bike though, which looks like unusually cheap translucent plastic.

One more positive note: It looks like the Moxie girlz fashions might just fit Blythe dolls. Now I'm wondering about the BFC Ink dolls too.

So apparently, the Barenaked Ladies rendition of the Hockey Night theme gets played tomorrow. And it will have lyrics.

D. and I came up with our own. Sing along, everybody!

Gonna drink some beer
Gonna watch some hockey
Gonna get in a fist fight with a guy wearing a toque

That's as far as we got before we keeled over laughing.

Oh good gravy. Check out what's on the Bratz Wiki page right now.

Listed for 2008:

  • Blackz: Sasha, Felicia, Destiny
  • Blondz: Cloe, Sonya, Leah, Polita

Soon to be followed by "Everyone Elsz," I'm sure. Good Lord, somebody out there actually thinks that racially segregated Bratz doll collections would be nifty. The mind bogglez.

A side order of more dolls I've never heard of, with the usual serving of New Name Salad:

  • World Sibilingz: Yasmin; Cole and Lina (Lil Twiins Cousins) / Cloe; Mia (Lil Sister) / Jade and Gavin (Father)
  • Twiinz: Mia, Isabelle

Psst: It's spelled "siblings."

Someone's also gone to town on the Collector's Edition section:

  • Why isn't Jade as Big?: Jade
  • 44-1 Bratz: Yasmin, Sasha, Jade, Meygan, Dana, Nevra, Fianna, Katia, Lana, May Lin, Kumi, Aubrey, Kina, Destiny, Peyton, Nona, Tess, Roxxi, Valentina, Phoebe, Nevaeh, Sierna, Orianna, Emanuelle, Sonya, Lela, Krysta, Rina, Sharidan, Breeana, Lina, Diona, Ciara, (Introducing) Popi, Tiana, Kiana, Lilani, Anna (First Time in doll), Briggite, Arienne, Adrienne, Noémie, Marielle, Cloe

In addition, there will be Why Isn't Sasha Shipped In The Regular Assortment Anyways Sasha.

New stuff... I think? [Dec. 23rd, 2008|10:45 pm]

Well, we're already up to our knees in snow out here in Vancouver, and they're predicting another big honkin' dump of it tonight. I'm fully expecting to be totally snowed in and unable to visit the folks on Christmas itself. (Eh, it's no big deal if we delay Giftmas by a few days. I'd rather be sure that no-one in my family is upside-down in a roadside snowbank.)

However, nothing short of a KILLSTORM 2008! is going to keep me from Boxing Day shopping.

Meanwhiles:

Snap-on Kidz Dylan, Cameron, Cade.

Bratz World Yasmin’s First Date Dolls. Yasmin & Brody. Is it just me, but is Brody unusually hawt for a Bratz Boyz doll? Dude should lay off the lipstick a bit though.

Rock climbing Sasha.

Speaking of magical girl anime... [Dec. 20th, 2008|02:51 pm]

Pretty Cure is coming to YTV!

I wonder if there'll be dolls? Or will we have to wait until it gets picked up in the US?

Incidentally, over in Japan the series has been through five (soon to be six) seasons, and so they're making a crossover movie with all three casts.

Personally I'm hoping all the squeaky-voiced pastel mascot characters have an epic battle to the death.

Abunai! Party Gyaru Witchy Sasha [Dec. 18th, 2008|08:34 pm]
[Tags|, , ]
[Current Mood | amused]

I spotted Party Cloe and Yasmin at Walmart today. Cloe's dress looks more like the tea-party-princess dealie Yas has on, except pale bleached blue denim (eurgh) with yellow ruffles, if I recall correctly. No hats though. And the box art showed a toned-down version of Sasha's costume. That gives me hope that Party Sasha's outfit will be de-crazified somewhat.

To recap said outfit:

A birthday party cone hat (made of satin) with a baseball brim, exposed bra, bare midriff, purple vest with gigantic 70s collar and contrasting cargo pockets, stiff blue pleated skirt, gold lamé capri leggings with a pink sport stripe, and checkered blue high tops with white tube socks. And some sort of caterpillar-based chain weapon on her wrist.

She'd make an excellent witchy villain for my wholly imaginary Ganbatte! Sweetheart Bratz anime.

A few more things from Taobao [Dec. 18th, 2008|08:07 pm]
[Tags|, ]

[info]floccentric pointed me towards these Taobao auctions:

Stylin' Yasmin, Fianna & Roxxi.

Kidz Play Sportz Soccer Cloe and Tennis Yasmin. The older-style character art doesn't remotely match the contents. Yas' main outfit is actually based on the Fitness Yasmin, with Tennis Fianna as the alternate, and Cloe's is based on Soccer and Cheerleader Cloes. Something about this strikes me as really weird, like maybe this was going to be a 4-doll collection and then MGA rushed to get it out the door before the judge's gavel came down?

Spring Break Sasha & Yasmin.

I can't recall if I've seen this title-free Cloe before.

Bratz is dead, long live Bratz (New stuff alert!) [Dec. 16th, 2008|11:44 pm]

[Current Mood | exhausted]

So... the Bratz brand may be doomed.

This article in Salon and this blog post sum up a lot of the reasons I ever liked Bratz in the first place.

I'm hoping that, even if they can't rescue the Bratz brand, MGA comes up with another doll line that continues the good things they have going... like relevant fashions, diversity, and all-fabric miniature purses. I certainly hope they had some sort of contingency plan, anyways. Sorry I don't have more thoughts on the topic than that right now. (I've been distracted by some heavy real life issues.)

Meanwhile, in the face of obliteration by litigation, I present.... new Bratz stuffs!

Sunshine and f***ing lollipops and lights at ends of tunnels [Oct. 29th, 2008|08:11 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I'm tired and cranky today, and there are upsetting things in my little sphere of reality that I can't talk about but, thankfully, they are finally almost done with. So I'm going to talk about random upbeat stuff today.

It looks like Steven Page is going to be OK. Good luck to you and yours, man.

Obama as a Jedi. That painting is totally sweet. Obama is like the Americans' Trudeau or something.

ChocolaTas! They make the best filled chocolates I've ever had, and they FINALLY have a permanent storefront in the Granville Island Public Market. I used to have to wait for the annual Circle Craft artisan's fair to roll around. No more! Woo hoo!

My new favorite manga: Saint Oniisan! Jesus and Buddha, sharing an apartment in the suburbs of Tokyo. Turns out Jesus is a bit of a geek. AWESOME.

Coca-cola with coconut syrup is super delicious.

I don't watch Naruto but the new OP is a total earworm.

Painting class is going well. My shiny black glass jar looks like a shiny black glass jar, and my red bell pepper looks exactly like a red bell pepper. The apple looked like a potato before I ever rendered it, I swear.

Imogen Heap! Turns out I like her music. Looking forward to her next album.

I have a new monitor, and I'm playing Warhammer Online with D. on at least a semi-regular basis.

Still sick. I have stuff I really need to get done for work tomorrow, but maybe I can beg off after I've gotten it done. I certainly look sufficiently miserable contagious.

Moah drawrings!

Because I just can't wrap my head around a campaign that thinks that they can turn a teenage shotgun wedding into a national warm-fuzzy that will even let them skip a week of hard campaigning work.

[Current Mood | ill]

I have a hideous head cold. I had to miss oil painting class and a day of work because of it and I swear it's getting worse. Which means no trips to Toys R Us or Beans for me this weekend.

However, I'm tempted to start in on another dollie knitting project. I can generally knit with my head held upright, thus preventing my nose from turning into a leaky faucet.

Not to mention I picked up that Debbie Bliss magazine earlier this week, which had some adorable egg cozies (So cute! So charming! So utterly useless!) that totally looked like Blythe sweaters. Pregnant Blythe sweaters, perhaps. And I'm clearly highly suggestible, since a blurb in there about scones had me searching grocery stores high and low in search of a jar of Devon cream. (Actually, I think that was the burst of energy I usually experience just as my immune system kicks into high gear for something.)

I'm also far too sick to visit any yarn shops. Not that I don't have a ridiculous stash compared to my actual knitting volume.

Ooh, knitted bangles! I could totally manage that.

Random other notes [Sep. 15th, 2008|09:49 pm]

[Current Mood | headachey]

I should note that I picked up a case of the new Re-ment dollie shoes a couple weeks ago but I haven't even cracked it open yet. I don't even know what my problem is there.

I have yet to locate the three new P4F Bratz girls, which is driving me crazy, since I've seen just about everything else in the fall Bratz lineup, but they're the ones I most want to buy.

I am totally snagging a copy of Ouran High School Host Club as soon as it comes out.

I'm gonna be taking an oil painting class! First class is this week.

On another art note: Those Copic markers on Yupo polypropylene paper that I was wondering about? The results were not so good. The results looked like a really uneven and blotchy watercolour painting, which was utterly not what I was trying to achieve.

And for my brother: A recipe for candied Cthulhufruit! Yes, really.

Here are two more P4F dolls that I haven't seen before. It's Cloe and Yasmin, of course.

Yasmin's outfit looks OK, but Cloe's strikes me as very 80s and not in a good way.

Guess where I just came back from? [Aug. 4th, 2008|09:55 pm]
[Tags|, , , , ]

SAN DIEGO! For a business conference starting four days after Comic-Con. Yeah, I'm cool.

Actually, it was my first time flying post-9/11. I didn't have any complications from security or Customs (phew!) but I did find the standardized "Yes, we manhandled your underwear" love letter from the TSA in my locked luggage when I got home.

Coles Notes version: Even this long after 9/11, I find the conspicuous patriotism really creepy and coercive in tone (At one point, I was told that public display of a Canadian flag was deemed potentially offensive to the rank-and-file American attendees). ZOMG, you Americans have liquor on sale in your drugstores! Horton Plaza Mall has a floor plan inspired by M.C. Escher. The San Diego Zoo and Balboa Park were amazing, and each merited far more time than we were given.

Also, we've been given an absurdly short deadline for a massive annual project. And I am not the rate determining step in the process.

I did finally see the Rhythmic Gymnastics Sasha at that drugstore. That's one of the dolls that I don't think I ever spotted at home. Also, the lone souvenir/magazines/snacks shop in the terrible SD airport terminal featured a hilariously ugly Carnival Cruises doll. It was a dollar store almost-Barbie packed in a clear mini backpack, wearing a red and white striped swimsuit, with browny-orange eyeshadow and blackish-purple lipstick.
